Oh my, it’s a time capsule!
I spy bygone decades there.
I spy – the head of my original ponytail doll (yep, her head only) More than likely the rest of her fell victim to my younger brother’s GI Joes, who probably roasted her skinny carcass over their campfire.
Always hoping to stumble across the right body to go with that head … *sigh*
She was #4 Ponytail Barbie, I believe, released in 1960, in the "new tan" body color that didn’t fade.
There is a set of wigs (barbie.mattel.com/shop/en-us/ba/barbie-signature-gallery/…) and I remember having the early ’60s Fashion Queen Barbie that went with them … but she is gone.
I spy – some fashions that date back to those early days, before I "grew up", packed up my Barbie trunk and snapped it shut for about 3 decades. (the red apron from What’s Cookin?
Release Date: 1964 – Mattel #1398_whatscookin, for example)
I spy – fashions that I received for birthdays and Christmases and some that I wheedled out of my mom if she wandered too close to the Barbie zone in the department store, and even a few extra precious treasures that my mom sewed up at her Singer machine on the family dining room table.
I’m sure that I never showed mom as much appreciation for those dresses as I should have. The craftsmanship is absolutely amazing!
I spy – another era of fashions which date to a slightly more recent decade, when a friend’s daughter (my honorary "niece") found her own interest in Barbie and my interest was re-ignited.
For instance, on the right side, there is part of the outfit from Hollywood Hair Barbie – 1992 Mattel #2308
She and I really bonded as we played Barbies together pretty regularly for a while – until – she also "grew up" –
and my trunk was snapped shut again for a couple of more decades – but not before I had added some fun "new" goodies to my old originals (because each time I shopped for gifts for my niece, I also seemed to find a little sump’n sump’n for myself).
I spy – a few fashions that I made by hand back then, in the ’80s … but they surely do not hold a candle to those made by my mom in the early ’60s.
Barbie is a patient friend,
she waits for as long as it takes for an old friend to come back around …
